As-salāmu ʿalaykum!
I am writing to encourage you to consider being nominated for service on the boards of the MCA. It’s an honor to serve our community, and to help address some common questions, here are some FAQ’s
1. Why are you stepping down? Don’t step down!
Alhamdulillah, it has been an honor to serve. Insha’Allah, it is more sustainable and beneficial for the entire community if we all take turns in leadership roles. Both the board and the community thrive on fresh energy, optimism, and diverse perspectives that new members bring.
2. Are the boards welcoming to women and mothers?
Alhamdulillah, I have personally found everyone to be incredibly supportive and welcoming. Meetings are held in conference rooms with windows when the community center is open, and there’s always the option to attend remotely. Everyone is very understanding and supportive of family needs, recognizing that family always comes first.
3. Isn’t it too big of a commitment?
The meeting schedule has shifted to every other week, which makes the commitment more manageable. There are dedicated staff at MCA who handle day-to-day operations, making it more possible for board members to focus on strategy and oversight. While serving is a commitment, the masjid is central to our lives and hearts and deserves good oversight. With clear boundaries that you set, it typically requires only a few hours a week, which you can schedule at your convenience.
4. Isn’t there too much conflict or politics?
I honestly can’t say if it’s “too much.” Conflict and politics do unfortunately exist. But I haven’t been a part of any group of people or community where everyone agrees about everything 100% of the time. Here’s how I try to stay positive and make change despite the challenges. I try to keep in mind that –
- Diversity of opinion and approaches is also a significant strength, especially of the MCA. Rarely have I been in such a diverse community as MCA.
- Ideally, we would always agree, but to make real change I have to have to be realistic too. The good thing is our constitution provides excellent guidance: all decisions are to be made using Robert’s Rules of Order which involves voting for motions.
- We have to be the change we wish to see. Things definitely won’t change if we don’t get involved. I find it helpful to stay focused on my objectives and to set clear boundaries for my availability. This approach makes it easier to navigate discussions constructively.
5. Is it possible for anything to change?
YES! But change requires fresh energy and diverse perspectives. Insha’Allah, you will be well-supported. MCA has a vibrant base of dedicated staff and volunteers. Too often, qualified individuals decline the opportunity to serve. Please decline only if you are content with MCA’s current state and will have no complaints =D We truly need your involvement and fresh, optimistic, and diverse perspective.
