Dr. Mostafa Abdel

First, I do appreciate our great Muslim community. I'm a retired physician after 25 years as urology surgeon (1970-1995), and 10 years (1995-2005) as medical research associate and director of the Institute of Islamic Medicine for Education and Research, working in the field of immunology and the relation between the negative mental attitude and unhealthy diet as a primary cause of cancer. I was offering counseling as part of our comprehensive program (Multimodality Immunotherapy Program) for cancer patients, based on my medical experiences and spiritual references helping them how to cope with their tragedy.

In 2003, I challenged myself to optimize my credibility in helping my patients by integrating academic psychological science and spiritual resources, so I decided to return back to the American School of Professional Psychology, Argosy University, Washington DC. With the blessing and help of God I was able to get my Masters degree in 2006. Since then, I have worked in North Virginia Family Services/Mental Health Department, and was honored to be an instrument to evaluate and treat 65 of severely traumatized clients who were victims of War or Politically Motivated Torture from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Sudan. In addition, I was honored to be the only bilingual Muslim Psychotherapist in Fairfax County, VA. I was able to evaluate and treat referred women who were victims of other gender in their countries to get their Asylum in the US. Furthermore, I did work as a primary bilingual psychotherapist conducting treatment strategies for Anger Management, Mood- Disturbance, Substance Abuse, in both individual, and group settings. I also demonstrated clinical skills for pre-marital, marital, and parenting counseling. My empathy, compassion, cultural awareness and deep understanding of the Cultural-Identity Conflict helped me to develop and maintain positive therapeutic relationships with clients of diverse populations. My intellectual maturity and clinical experiences combined with my cultural background enable me to perform my duties in a consistently competent and Professional manner.

In August 2008, I resigned and decided to come back to CA to live close to our children and grand children after a major test from God when my wife had her stroke. I decided to be her primary care giver and Alhamdulillah God helped us pass this critical transition. I am honored to offer my services to my community members as a professional Psychotherapist who has been blessed by the Islamic faith. I welcome individual/couple counseling as well as group educational and coaching sessions.
