MCA response to cartoons
February 07th, 2006
Brothers and Sisters in Islam Assalamu Alaikum
As we witness the outrage in the Muslim world over the derogatory depictions of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), we are dismayed at the level of violence being perpetrated. Islam condemns acts of violence and preaches tolerance, compassion and forgiveness. The cartoons initially published in a Danish newspaper were viewed as intentional defamation of the prophet and an attack on Islam. These cartoons come on the heels of other events that have vilified Islam and Muslims.
As hateful as the cartoons maybe, we, as Muslims, must respond in a manner that adheres to Prophet Muhammad's teachings and not succumb to the temptations of responding to hate with more hate.
"You do not do evil to those who do evil to you, but you deal with them with forgiveness and kindness." That's what Prophet Muhammad preached in reaction to personal attacks and abuse.
We call on all Muslims and people of other faiths to reach out to each other to combat violence and incitement of violence. Towards that end, the Muslim Community Association in Santa Clara extends its hand by inviting people of all faiths to join us for an open house on Sunday, February 19th from 2 PM to 4 PM at 3003 Scott Blvd., Santa Clara.
