  About the Khutbah Committee
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious and the Most Merciful

To goal of the Khutbah Committee is to select Khateebs for the Jummah prayers at all MCA locations and to provide a balanced sermon to the members of the community within the guidelines of the charter of the organization.

Objectives:

  • Create guidelines for Khateebs that reflect the MCA charter.

  • Define topical and important themes that MCA should focus on and select speakers based on these areas of focus.

  • Select Khateebs based on their balanced portrayal of Islam.

  • Handle last-minute changes and communicate effectively with EC, Publications, and other committees to let them know if there are changes.

Execution Plan

The Khutba master schedule will be managed by a master scheduler assigned by the chairman. The goal of the committee is to have khateebs scheduled 4 weeks in advance with flexibility to make last minute changes in case of emergencies. The Khateebs will be published two-weeks in advance in the MCA website. The following issues need to be discussed.

The committee will create a document outlining the guidelines for selection and assignment of khateebs. This document will address the following issues.

  1. Very often khateebs give conflicting messages to the Jumma attendees causing confusion in their minds. The Khutba committee work with EC to come with a list of MCA policy positions so the khateeb is aware of the position of MCA on key issues and strive to reinforce but not contradict these messages. While there are some issues on which it is difficult to come up with a consensus, there are many issues on which there is broad consensus. These include political participation, direction of Qibla, dawah to people of other faith, belief in working with local, state and federal govt to address issues concerning muslims, etc., respect for local laws.
  2. The committee will come up with a list of themes to address in the khutba.
  3. Khutba Advisory Panel: There will be advisory panel that khutba committee can see guidance on a variety of issues. The panel would provide advise on fiqh issues, khutba themes. We will strive to include a prominent youth from our community, and a sister to get unique perspective of these segments of our community. The khutba committee will have a quarterly meeting with the advisory panel.
  4. Khutba feedback. In addition to the feedback we get online, the khutba committee will have a group of  volunteers to solicit feedback after every khutba. This is particularly important for sisters since their issues are not always prominent. We have heard complaints about lack of working public address system to noise in the sister area that prevent them from listening to the khateeb. It is the goal of the khutba committee to strive respond to every feedback either in a general way or a specific way. The challenge for khutba committee is communicating the feedback pertaining to the khateeb. We will strive to get come up with a standardized way that we can communicate to the khateeb ahead of time so they do not feel uncomfortable.
